chocolate effects on the brain

What makes Chocolate such an irresistible part of our life? Everyone loves the sensations that a delicious piece of chocolate gives  -  chocolate never fails to create feelings of well-being throughout the body when ingested. You may think it is the smell and flavor alone that  encourages everyone to enjoy this treat, but in reality there are plenty of chemical factors in chocolate that create that feeling of happiness.

A gift of chocolate is more than just the experience we normally think of as taste. As soon as you bring the chocolate in range of  the nose, to have the first encounter with it smell wise, things start happening in the brain. In studies, scientists have found that theta brain waves begin to increase when we smell  chocolate. This is the same brain activity that occurs when you relax deeply, or when we  are asleep. This is one of the ways that a hint of cocoa takes us to a pleasant state of mind.

When you have finally bitten into that wonderful piece of chocolate and its creaminess is melting on your tongue, another brain activity begins. Investigators have  found that Chocolate has  the property of increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Both of these neurotransmitters in the brain causes feelings of happiness and well being in the body.

The substance in chocolate that triggers the brain to produce more of these neurotransmitters is called tryptophan. When serotonin is released it produces feelings of joy, excitement, and in some cases,  a state  of ecstasy.  Another natural ingredient in chocolate that is that acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain is phenylethylalamine.  After eating a delicious piece of  chocolate, this chemical instructs the brain to give you feelings of happiness, attraction and a positive mood.

Some people equate the  eating a box of chocolate to having sex, and the comparison is not too far off.  Making love and eating chocolate both stimulate similar activities in the brain and bring about similar emotions. Now you know why the number one gift on Valentine's Day is a box of chocolates! When you give chocolates to someone you love, you are telling them that the feelings they get from eating chocolates is the same they will have being with you... Chocolate is definitely a romantic gift.

So now you know why natural chocolates are so popular - they help us to feel relaxed, happy and even joyful. And not only that, but they also contain antioxidants that can help us live longer...
