Mormons do not drink coffee?
A friend told me that his Mormon religion forbids drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and using drugs. However, drink caffeinated beverages, chocolate, hot chocolate, etc. I asked about this and his reply was that is a common misconception that prohibits Mormons caffeine. He said it was the chemicals in coffee that "basically to kill". And the example of a coffee drinker can be removed when going without coffee, but a chocaholic not "shake and get nervous or headaches" when it is not chocolate, because it's the chemicals in coffee horrible, no caffeine. Anyone familiar with Mormonism has something to say about this? I am a coffee drinker. Am I in the dark about something horrible, addition of caffeine in coffee? What is the religious foundation (detail) of this rule of coffee?
The "no coffee" rule taught by the Mormon Church stems from what is known as the "Word of Wisdom." Although coffee is among specific members should refrain beverages, consumption of other things that may pose health risks (caffeine, chocolate, Krispy Kreme, etc) are left to the discretion of individual members. The church members often give their own reasons why coffee is included and others left out, but again, these are their reasons. The Church teaches that those who follow the word of wisdom to receive physical, temporal and spiritual blessings. Here's some background on the topic: The early church leaders sometimes gathered in a small room where many smoking and chewing snuff. One of the attendees said: "The brothers came to that place for hundreds of miles to attend school in a small room, probably not more than eleven by fourteen. When they met everyone in this room after breakfast, the first he did was to light his pipe, and, while smoking, talk about the great things of the kingdom, ... and as soon as the pipe was out of his mouth a large piece of snuff would taken. Often when the Prophet entered the room to give instructions from the school would be in a cloud of snuff. This, and the complaints of his wife to have to clean [the] floor, the Prophet did think about the matter, and asked the Lord in relation to the conduct of the elders in the use of snuff. "(Journal of Discourses, 12:158). In this research took the following tips in Mormon scripture: "Alcoholic beverages [or, in other words, alcohol or harmful] not for the belly. "The snuff is not for the body ... and not good for man. " hot drinks [defined as tea and coffee] are not for the body. "Those foods are good for the man described in these words:" All healthy herbs God ordained by the constitution, nature, and the use of man, "Every herb in its season, and every fruit in its season," Flesh ... Of the animals and birds of the sky ... be used sparingly "All grain is ordained for the use of man ... to be the mainstay of life. ..." All grain is good for human food, as also the fruit of the vine ". In 1851, President Brigham Young proposed to the General Conference of the All Saints Church officially agreed to keep the Word of Wisdom. This was confirmed unanimously by the members of the Church. Since that day, the revelation has been a binding mandate for all members of the Church. I hope this helps.
