Is co-codamol for period pain a good idea?
I suffer terribly with period pain. I eat well and avoid caffeine, don't smoke etc etc. Some months are worse than others and being on the pill does help. I generally tri-cycle the pill I'm on which helps but the period I have now is agony. The pain is making me sick and I'm struggling to get anything done. Hot water bottles and dark chocolate aren't sufficient! I can't take ibuprofen and I'm allergic to mefenamic acid and other drugs like it. My doctor prescribed me 30/500 co-codamol today so I can get some adequate pain relief but I'm not to take it regularly or long term because of the possible ugly side Effects. I've done some research though and recent studies seem to suggest that its a pretty pointless drug. What's the truth behind this? It makes me exhausted and pretty much knocks me out so its helped so far but is there something better I can take for short term pain relief for period pain?
That some times the pains are worse than others makes me believe you have tight back muscles that are a part of the problem. Tight back muscles can press onto the nerves, as they leave the spine, for other organs to cause them to act up or go into pain. If the muscles touch the nerves for your ovaries it will cause them to be in more pain as they go through their cycle. More pressure, as you have sometimes, causes more pains. To get rid of the problem you have to free up your back muscles to get the pressure off the nerves and here's how to do that:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
