In third grade my teacher made us read this book and then made us watch the movie. That was the suppidest, lamest, dumbest, worst book that I have ever read and the worst movie that I have ever seen. Since, then I have been forced many times by teachers to watch that horrible movie. I don’t know what Ronald Dahl was thinking when he wrote that horrid book. Or why anyone would want to make it into a movie. I happen to like all of the other books that I have read by Ronald Dahl, especially Matilda and the Witches.(And their movies) But, not that book. In conclusion, I HATE CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY! And I give it a ZERO, 0 for a rating. ZIP, ZERO, Zilch! Not even one star, like I had to put because zero wasn’t a choice.

It is most unfortunate that the only girl role models are such horrid brats!

My 4 year old daughter kept asking about and referring back to Veruca Salt and Violet Beauregarde. But can one say anything positive about those ill-fated characters? At this critical time in her development, when she’s looking to women and girls (real and in literature) as role models, the only girls in sight are punished and humiliated for their aggressiveness.

I don’t begrudge Charlie and his spiritual journey with Grandpa Joe, or his final reward. But there’s nothing in the book of redeeming value for girls to identify with, unless one counts long-winded railing against spoilt kids with very bad habits?

The underlying message of this book is that girls have no part in larger adventures and rewards, that men and boys and male Oompa Loompas run the show. Mothers are either shrill, hysterical harpies or passive, feckless shadows.

I thought this book was not very good. Nobody died because of the oompa-loompa. The characters were very stupid. I didn’t like augustus because he ate to much. The arguing was o.k.
